STUDIO EN PROVENCE

Salernes

Version française

INTRODUCTION

A clean, fresh, bright and  spacious new Studio apartment (25m2 ; 270 sq ft) in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with fabulous views from its covered south facing Terrace over a valley of vines and olive trees to the hills beyond. Yet it is only 1.5 km from the charming Provencal village of Salernes, known for its ‘tomettes’ tiles, its many potteries and its bi-weekly market .

In a peaceful cul-de-sac,  all you will hear are the sounds of nature – birds, butterflies, tortoises, the occasional deer,  and the babbling River Bresque, a few hundred metres away.

The Studio adjoins the owners’ villa, built 2008-9, and has its own entrance, private garden (next to a small wood) and use of the villa’s superb south facing infinity swimming pool, which it overlooks.

It is a Self-Catering Studio.

LOCATION

Salernes is about 100 km (1.25 hours drive) from both Nice and Toulon/Hyeres International Airports and 30 km (half an hour’s drive) from the A 8 Motorway, thus giving easy access to the Côte d'Azur, Monaco (2.5 hours drive) and Italy (3 hours drive.)

The TGV train from Paris stops at Draguignan/Les Arcs (about 30 mins drive).

The nearest large town is Draguignan (20 minutes drive),  St Tropez is about 60 km away and Lac de St Croix – the village of Bauduen - (with its beach and water sports) is 25 km away (30 mins.) The nearest seaside beaches are at Frejus/St Raphael (55 Km) and St Maxime (from where you can get to St Tropez by boat in just 10 minutes).

There are delightful medieval villages within 10-15 minutes, there’s the charming hilltop village of Tourtour (known as The Village in the Sky), the Gorge de Verdon (known as The Grand Canyon of Europe), Moustiers Sainte Marie and many more.

We’ll be happy to give you ideas of places to go and things to do, especially our favourite restaurants.

Salernes is a bustling, vibrant large village (pop 3742, Jan 2009), with a plentiful choice of cafes, restaurants, (the nearest restaurant is a delightful, tented Moroccan restaurant, just 5 minutes drive), potteries, bakers, chemists, Provencal gift shops and various supermarkets, large and small. The ‘old village’ is on a hill leading up to the ruined castle which overlooks the village. Salernes has several pre-historic sites including Tholos de la Lauve .

There is a Neolithic burial site within 10 minutes drive (and then a serious hike uphill), the Chapelle de la Croix de Sollies on the hill behind (and way above) our property, is on the highest point of Salernes (425m above sea level) and was the site of a fortified village in the Bronze Age (about 3,200 years ago).  Neanderthal Man is thought to have lived in our immediate area (Haut Gaudrun) about 100,000 years ago.

As a celebration of the long history of tile/ceramic manufacture in the village, there is a newly-opened Terra Rossa Ceramic Museum just over 1 Km from the Studio.
